Villa Boheme Tamraght
The Other Ugly Side of Volunteering
Physical Harassment Free Labor ,Toxic Vibes,

What started as a simple volunteering-for-accommodation agreement quickly turned into free labor, emotional manipulationblackmail, stalking and physical harassment.

Slavery is when you’re trapped in a a guesthouse and have the fruits of your labour taken from you without compensation.

RUN. But do it mindfully, without gratitude

Maybe instead of “I have a dream”
the wall should’ve just said: “Run.”

I love the people who hang quotes but you know they are incredibly shitty people in real life

Relax, your secrets somehow arrive before you do - even the parts you haven’t told anyone yet.

If you ask for a stable place to sleep? They’ll hit you with a smile and a “you will sleep in the garage”
Very spiritual.

Why this blog?

Volunteeringis often glorified on social media, but the reality can be much messier.
I want to give people a more complete picture of what volunteering can be, the red flags to look out for, and how important it is to trust your instincts.
Hopefully, this blog can help others avoid making the same mistakes I did, or at least be better prepared for the unexpected twists that come with travel.
After all, the road isn’t always what we imagine, but it’s what we make of it.

Red flags to watch out for in work exchanges

Work exchanges can sound like a great opportunity, but there are key red flags to watch for. If the expectations aren’t clear from the start, or if the owner becomes overly controlling about your time, that’s a sign. Watch out for situations where you're expected to work beyond the agreed hours without compensation or appreciation

Stories about mental health, boundaries, and physical harrassment

Volunteering in a toxic environment can seriously impact your mental health. When boundaries aren’t respected and the workload is overwhelming, it can quickly lead to burnout. The pressure to constantly give, without time to recharge or reflect, takes a toll on your well-being.

What People Think - Coming soon

It’s easy to trust positive reviews, but in reality, many of them felt fake, like some people were just too afraid to speak up about the hidden side of the place — or maybe they didn’t even see the truth themselves. You can’t truly understand a place or a person in just a few nights.

What was supposed to be a beautiful travel experience turned into something heavy. It changed the way I see volunteering, but it won’t change the way I see traveling. I still believe in the value of exploring new places and cultures — just with more caution and a better understanding of what to look out for.
